Having always been an avid sportsman living in London,UK , that included playing competitive league football, (soccer to all my American friends), amateur rugby, and cricket my entire adult life, I then took the plunge and headed out across the pond to start a new beginning and life in the Sunshine state of Florida without anymore team sports at the end of 2007.
I thought that would be it for me as an active team player until I was kidnapped, by a family friend, and ventured into a new game known as Softball cricket that kept me fairly fit for 7 years. That was until I woke up one sunday morning and the buzz of the game was no longer there for me. The excitement and adrenalin pump I had previously was sadly gone after all these years competing and it suddenly dawned on me that it was a good time to retire and go graze the nearest pasture.
The entire body pains on a monday morning after a cricket game sped up the retirement process too and it was a feeling I no longer wanted to experience, hence the need for another pastime to take up.
I did not want to be totally out of the sports environment and looked into getting a DSLR and capture locals games I happened to be at watching.
The Canon T6 was my choice bundled in with 2 kit lens. A 18-55mm and a 70-300mm 4.5 and I thought I at least had a good starting point to begin with. Other freebies in the bundle included a flash, a wrist strap, 2 telephoto screw on lenses, a blower, a cloth to keep the glass clean, and a bag to keep it all organized and tidy in.
To this day all those added bundled items served no purpose at all for me and are still not used to this day !!
Feeling like a professional photographer, I then ventured out to a local park near me equipped with my fresh DSLR and saw a soccer game going on. Standing up on the halfway line I started praying and spraying everything that moved, including the referee and both linesmen. I'm sure I would of got the ever present one man and his dog if he were there too.
I was happy and confident I had captured game action and everything of worth.
After the game was finished, I raced home eagerly anticipating all my glorious images to be ready for Sports Illustrated......as it turned out my images resembled more like ready for Sports Decapitated.....I had butchered around 95% of my pictures. Getty
were not going to be calling me anytime soon!!
My images were out of focus, limbs chopped off, headless players and busy backgrounds that were more in focus than the actual subject. I really had a long way to go.
Google then became my best friend for tips.
It was time to get serious, do some research, and start my journey at becoming a better photographer
